With the Championship scheduling league games during the FA Cup 5th Round weekend, Robbie Findley took advantage with a strong substitute performance for Nottingham Forest. Entering at halftime, Finley helped kick start the Forest offense in a 2-0 defeat of Coventry. Garath McCleary scored in the 74th minute and Findley made it 2-0 in the 86th. A tough debut for Robbie Rogers, who subbed on in the 79th minute in a 3-2 win over Doncaster but had to be subbed off in stoppage time after being knocked unconscious in a clash of heads. Leeds had trailed 2-0, but Andros Townsend cut that lead in half in the 55th a minute after Doncaster scored. Adam Clayton equalized in the 80th with Liciano Becchio scoring in stoppage time for the win.
Tim Howard was the only American involved in Everton's 2-0 win over Blackpool to advance in the FA Cup. In what would have been his final game before rejoining the LA Galaxy. Landon Donovan was absent with the flu. Everton were up a minute in when Royston Drenthe scored and two goals up five minutes later through Denis Stracqualursi. Blackpool missed a penalty in stoppage time. Tim Ream got his debut for Bolton in a 2-0 win over Millwall in a game that showed the gap in quality between a relegation threatened Premier League club and a Championship team. Ryo Miyaichi had Bolton ahead by the fourth minute with David Ngog scoring in the 59th. Jonathan Spector and Birmingham City drew 1-1 with Chelsea. Spector subbed on in the 78th minute, with the score already settled. Birmingham got the first goal at Stamford Bridge in the 20th minute through David Murphy. Chelsea missed a penalty three minutes later, equalizing in the 62nd.
In Scotland, Rangers' announcement that the club would enter administration carried with it a 10-point penalty in the standings and that was followed by a 1-0 loss to Kilmarnock at Ibrox. Maurice Edu and Carlos Bocanegra started for Rangers.
"It goes without saying we go out and try to do our best and win games for the fans at the best of times," Rangers manager Ally McCoist said. "But today it's really, really painful we didn't manage to do it for them."
Fabian Johnson and Danny Williams both started for Hoffenheim in a 1-1- draw with Mainz. Hoffenheim went up in the 9th minute courtesy of an own goal, with Mainz equalizing in the 29th minute. Johnson subbed out in the 72nd minute. Timmy Chandler started for Nurnberg, beating Cologne 2-1 at the EasyCredit-Stadion. Nurnberg were up a goal in the 18th minute when Alexander Esswein scored. Cologne equalized in the 66th, with Tomas Pekhart scoring Nurnberg's winner in the 85th. Chandler subbed out in the 82nd minute.
Oguchi Onyewu started for Sporting in their 1-0 win against Pacos de Ferreira, but had to leave the game in the 26th minute due to injury. Sporting scored from an own goal in the 36th minute and had a penalty saved in the 70th minute.
“It is a really strong feeling of responsibility for me being the coach of my club," Sporting coach Ricardo Sa Pinto said after his first win. "I want to do my best and I want to get the lads feeling confident. All I ask for is patience and that the fans carry on supporting us."
Jozy Altidore played the second-half for AZ,losing 3-0 to Utrecht. In Belgium, Mix Diskerud made his debut for Gent, drawing 1-1- with Lokeren. Diskerud subbed out in the 76th minute. Sacha Kljestan started for Anderlecht, beating Westerlo 3-1. Kljestan subbed out in the 80th minute.
In the Premier Division, Edgar Castillo went the distance for Tijuana in a 2-0 win against Queretaro at the La Corregidora stadium. Jose Sand opened the scoring in the 50th minute with Duvier Riascos doubling the lead three minutes later. Castillo was yellow carded in the 56th minute. Herculez Gomez subbed on in the 79th minute for Santos Laguna, drawing 1-1 with Monterrey. Luis Perez put Monterrey ahead in the 53rd minute with Aaron Galindo equalizing in the 81st. DaMarcus Beasley and Puebla lost 2-1 at home to Morelia. Puebla took the lead in the 51st minute, but were level in the 72nd and gave up the game winner in the 85th. Beasley subbed off in the 74th minute. Jose Torres went the distance for Pachuca in a 1-0 loss to Club America in Mexico City. Club America scored in the 56th minute. Torres was yellow carded in the 69th.
