Though they lost 2-1 on the night, Monterrey’s first-leg result was the difference in the CONCACAF Champions League final. Monterrey beat Santos Laguna 3-2 on aggregate, with Neri Cardozo scoring in the 81st minute at the Nuevo Estadio Corona. Santos had taken a 2-0 lead with goals from Daniel Luduena (45th) and Oribe Peralta (50th). Herculez Gomez subbed on for Luduena in the 56th minute. Santos Laguna finished with six of their 11 shots on goal to Monterrey’s two from seven.
"They are the just champions," Santos coach Benjamin Galindo told CONCACAF’s official site. "In Monterrey, they beat us through and through."
