R.I.P Andy Mate

CONCACAF has confirmed that US National Team player Andy Mate died on May 13th at the age of 72. Mate had one cap with the National Team, appearing in the 1964 game against England.

During that era, the National Team rarely played. That lone game in 1964 was the first for the team since 1960.   Mate played his club soccer in the German American Soccer League in the 1960’s, and was key to New York Hungaria SC’s dominance in that league.  New York Hungaria won the 1962 US Open Cup and became the first team to beat a Mexican club in Mexico during the 1963 CONCACAF Champions Cup.  Mate was an original member of the New York Cosmos, signing with the club for the 1971 North American Soccer League season.
