Alejandro Bedoya got the start on a tough night for Helsingborg in the playoff stage of the UEFA Champions League. Celtic opened the scoring in the 2nd minute and doubled their lead in the 75th at Olympic Stadium. They now carry that advantage back to Celtic Park for the second leg.
"The job is only half done," Celtic manager Neil Lennon said. "There is a big game at Celtic Park to come. Helsingborg showed how dangerous they can be."
Jonathan Spector got the start for Birmingham City in a 3-2 loss to Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Tuesday. Wednesday were up from two first-half goals when Birmingham staged a comeback. Nikola Zigic scored in the 78th minute, but Wednesday got their third a minute from time. Marlon King converted from the penalty spot in stoppage time to pull City within a goal, but that was it for the offense. A league down, Frank Simek got the start for Carlisle, but it was Tranmere doing the scoring in a 3-0 shutout. Tranmere's Andy Robinson had a hat trick.
Carlos Bocanegra started for Rangers in a 1-0 win over Falkirk in Scotland's League Cup. Andy Little scored the winner in the 45th minute.
