Clint Dempsey got the start and almost got a goal in Tottenham's 0-0 draw with Lazio in Group J. Dempsey had a goal called back for offside, one of three for Spurs who led on shots taken, shots on goal, and corners. Dempsey subbed out in the 76th minute. Brad Friedel wasn't in the squad for Spurs.
Terrence Boyd got the start in Rapid Vienna's 2-1 loss to Mix Diskerud's Rosenborg, who took the lead in the 18th minute and were up two goals by the 60th. Rapid's comeback started when Markus Katzer equalized five minutes later, but they failed to convert a 69th minute penalty. Rapid hosted the game in an empty stadium due to UEFA sanctions over earlier crowd trouble. Diskerud subbed out in stoppage time.
Alejandro Bedoya's Helsingborg lost to Levante 1-0 in Spain. Levante scored in the 40th minute and needed one save for the shutout. Steve Cherundolo took his regular place in the starting lineup for Hannover 96's 2-2 draw with Twente. Taking the lead in the 7th minute, Twente were ahead by two in the 54th. Hannover pulled a goal back when Artur Sobiech scored in the 68th and equalized through an own goal five minutes later.
