
Fabian Johnson and Danny Williams both went the distance for Hoffenheim in a 3-0 win over Stuttgart. Takashi Usami opened the scoring in the 5th minute with Joselu making it 2-0 in the 47th. Johnson scored Hoffenheim's third in the 58th minute. Williams was yellow carded in the 42nd.
Steve Cherundolo's Hannover 96 got the 4-1 win over Timmy Chandler's Nurnberg in the Bundesliga, but it was Chandler who spoiled the shutout. Lars Stindl put Hannover up in the 21st minute and it was 2-0 when Szabolcs Huszti scored eight minutes later. Didier Ya Konan scored two second-half goals in the 52nd and 63rd. Chandler's goal came in the 73rd minute, scoring on one of two shots Nurnberg put on frame. Hannover was four for four on shots on goal.
Clint Dempsey started and played 75 minutes as Spurs advanced past Frank Simek and Carlisle United 3-0 in the League Cup. Jan Vertonghen opened the scoring in the 37th minute at Brunton Park, with Andros Townsend making it 2-0 in the 53rd. Gylfi Sigurdsson scored in the 89th minute. Brad Friedel wasn't in the squad for Tottenham.
“It was a fantastic ground, a fantastic pitch, there was a lot of home support and everything prepared for a big game," Spurs assistant coach Steffen Freund said. “It was a test for our young team but in the end we created chances and deserved to win.
