National Teamers Abroad: Premier League starts

In the Premier League, Brad Friedel and Clint Dempsey were in the starting eleven for Spurs, losing 4-2 to Chelsea in a London derby. Chelsea were in front by the 17th minute at White Hart Lane, with William Gallas equalizing for Tottenham in the 47th minute. Spurs went ahead when Jermaine Defoe scored seven minutes later. Chelsea answered back in the 66th minute and took the lead for good in the 69th. They scored their third a minute into stoppage time.

"At 3-2, we had chances to level the score and 4-2 is irrelevant because we were searching for 3-3,” Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas said. "Everyone is disappointed because we wanted to go nearer to the top and this was a good chance to bring them down, but we have 30 more games ahead of us and we have to be focused and ready for them.

Brad Guzan started and Eric Lichaj subbed on in the 62nd minute for Aston Villa, losing 1-0 to Fulham. Lichaj picked up a yellow card in the 77th minute. Geoff Cameron and Stoke City lost 4-2 to Manchester United. Tim Howard and Everton drew 1-1 with QPR. Everton trailed from the 2nd minute, equalizing on a 33rd minute own goal. Steven Pienaar was red carded in the 61st minute.

In the Championship, Tim Ream got the start for Bolton in a 3-2 win over Bristol City. Jonathan Spector exited in the 94th minute in Birmingham City’s 1-1 draw with Leicester City after picking up a second yellow card. Zak Whitbread started for Leicester, getting yellow carded in the 44th minute. In League One, Frank Simek and Carlisle were shutout 2-0 by Colchester. Robbie Rogers subbed on in the 83rd minute for Stevenage, beating MK Dons 1-0.

Bundesliga, and Fabian Johnson’s Hoffenheim drew 2-2 with Greuther Furth. Hoffenheim looked to have a late winner when Joselu scored his second goal of the game in the 89th minute, but Greuther Furth equalized for the third time three minutes into stoppage time. Jermaine Jones subbed on in the 79th minute for Schalke in their 2- win over Borussia Dortmund. Schalke opened the scoring through Ibrahim Afellay in the 14th minute with Marco Hoger doubling the lead in the 48th. Steve Cherundolo’s Hannover 96 lost 3-1 to Eintracht Frankfurt. Mohammed Abdellaoue cut Eintracht’s lead in half in the 43rd minute, but that was it for the Hannover offense. Timmy Chandler’s Nurnberg finished 0-0 against Augsburg.

Terrence Boyd played the second-half for Rapid Vienna, losing 2-0 to Austria Vienna. Boyd was yellow carded in the 64th minute. Serie A, and Michael Bradley subbed on in the 88th minute for Roma’s 4-2 win over Genoa. Roma trailed 2-0 by the 15th but were level by halftime. In Spain’s second division, Carlos Bocanegra’s Racing Santander played out a scoreless draw with Lugo. Bocanegra picked up a yellow card in the 76th minute.

Denmark, and Michael Parkhurst subbed on in the 73rd minute for Nordsjaelland in a 3-0 shutout of Silkeborg. Alejandro Bedoya and Helsingborg drew 1-1 with Orebro in Sweden. Orebro equalized in stoppage time. In Norway, Mix Diskerud went the distance for Rosenborg in a 2-0 shutout of Sadnes.

Liga MX, and Joe Corona subbed on in the 65th minute for Tijuana’s 2-2 draw with Cruz Azul. Pablo Aguilar equalized for Tijuana in the 19th with a Dubier Riascos penalty putting them up in the 67th minute. Cruz Azul leveled the score in the 75th. Jose Torres’s Pachuca drew Monterrey 1-1. Herculez Gomez played the second-half in Santos Laguna’s 4-1 road loss to Toluca. Oribe Peralta scored for Santos in the 69th minute.
