Wins for Villa, Schalke, and Anderlecht

Aston Villa advanced in the League Cup with a win over Swindon.Aston Villa beat Swindon Town 3-2 in the League Cup on Tuesday at County Ground. Trailing by two goals, Swindon staged a late comeback equalizing in the 81st after scoring in the 78th. Eric Lichaj started and assisted on Christian Benteke’s stoppage time winner.

“I thought it was our doing because at two-nil we were doing ever so well,” Villa manager Paul Lambert said. “They get the goal and then they hit us again. Then the crowd go up another notch. But I thought the team were brilliant to get the result and finish the game off after Swindon gave it a go.”

Jermaine Jones was in the lineup for Schalke 04, shutting out Sanhausen 3-0 in the DFB Pokal. Ibrahim Afellay opened the scoring in the 11th minute. Ciprian Marica doubled the lead in the 62nd, with Klass-Jan Huntelaar getting Schalke’s third goal in the 79th minute.

In league play, Sacha Kljestan’s Anderlecht shutout Gent 5-0. Tom De Sutter scored twice.
