National Teamers Abroad: Another AZ goal for Altidore

Jozy Altidore once again showed he can score in the Eredivisie.  With AZ trailing ADO Den Haag 2-1, Altidore equalized in the 64th for the 2-2 draw.  Sacha Kljestan also scored, part of a glut of goals from Anderlecht in their 6-1 defeat of Club Brugge at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium.  Kljestan scored Anderlecht’s fourth goal in the 54th minute. 

Michael Bradley and Roma lost 3-2 to Lazio in the Rome derby.  Roma led from a 9th minute Erik Lamela goal, but gave up three unanswered before Miralem Pjanic scored in the 86th. Oguchi Onyewu and Malaga lost 2-1 to Real Sociedad in the Primera Division.  Sociedad opened the scoring in the 1st minute with Javier Saviola equalizing in the 37th.  Sociedad got their winner in the 59th minute.  A league down, Carlos Bocanegra’s Racing Santander was shutout 1-0 by Girona.  Bocanegra picked up a yellow card in the 27th minute. Terrence Boyd subbed on at halftime in Rapid Vienna’s 2-0 loss to Wolfsberger. 

In the English Premier League, Brad Guzan got the start for Aston Villa losing 3-2 to Manchester United. Villa lead 2-0 with Andreas Weiman scoring in first-half stoppage time and in the 50th minute.  Manchester United were level from a 63rd minute own-goal, with Javier Hernandez wanting to count it as the second of his three goals.  Hernandez scored the winner in the 87th.

"I am proud,” Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert said. “I thought they were outstanding. I couldn't ask for anymore. But that's why Manchester United are a top side. They do it week in week out.”

Geoff Cameron and Stoke shutout Queens Park Rangers 1-0 on a 52nd-minute Charlie Adam goal at the Britannia Stadium.  “We’re absolutely delighted with the win and that’s all that matters,” Stoke manager Tony Pulis said. “We have played a lot, lot better this season, but this was an occasion when the result mattered more than the performance, and we’ve got the win that we needed today.

Tim Howard and Everton came back from a goal down to beat Sunderland 2-1 at Goodison Park.  Marouane Fellaini equalized in the 77th minute and then setup Nikica Jelavic’s winner two minutes later.  On Sunday, Brad Friedel and Clint Dempsey started for Spurs in a 2-1 loss to Manchester City.  Steven Caulker opened the scoring for Spurs in the 21st minute, but they gave up two second-half goals. 

A league down, Zak Whitbread and Leicester finished 2-2 with Nottingham Forest.  Leicester went up in the 7th minute from an own-goal and gave up a penalty in the 67th for Forest’s equalizer.  Jonathan Spector and Birmingham City fell behind in the 13th minute from a Blackburn penalty.  Marlon King equalized four minutes later in the 1-1 draw at Ewood Park.  In League One, Frank Simek and Carlisle United lost 2-1 to Brentford. 

In the Bundesliga, Jermaine Jones setup Julian Draxler’s 69th minute winner in Shalke’s 2-1 result over Werder Bremen.  Fabian Johnson and Danny Williams went the distance for Hoffenheim, who needed a 39th minute goal from Joselu to draw 1-1 with Fortuna Dusseldorf.  Steve Cherundolo subbed out in the 87th minute for Hannover, coming back to beat Stuttgart 4-2 at the Mercedes-Benz-Arena.  Hannover trailed by two goals at the half, but two penalties helped them take all three points. 

Denmark, and Michael Parkhurst and Nordsjaelland drew 2-2 with Randers.  Nordsjaelland needed an 82nd minute penalty for the point. Clarence Goodson and Brondby beat Silkeborg 2-1 on a stoppage time winner from Simon Christoffersen who score both of Brondby’s goals.  In Norway, Mix Diskerud and Rosenborg were shutout 1-0 by Fredrikstad. 

Liga MX, and Herculez Gomez subbed on in the 69th minute in Santos Laguna’s 2-0 loss to Morelia.  DaMarcus Beasley and Puebla was shutout 1-0 by Queretaro.  Edgar Castillo and Tijuana got goals from Alfredo Moreno in the first minute and Dubier Riascos in the 3rd to shutout Chivas 2-0.  Tijuana finishes second in the 2012 Apertura.  Defending champions Santos Laguna failed to qualify for the playoffs.
