WASHINGTON, DC (July 11, 2008) USSoccerPlayers -- US National Team player Benny Feilhaber is not expected to be a member of Derby County for much longer, with the club planning on releasing him and as many as five other players.
Though an official announcement has yet to be made, Derby manager Paul Jewell has made it clear he won't be keeping several players as he continues tweaking the club's roster. Feilhaber had returned to training after recovering from an injury suffered with the US Under-23 National Team at the Toulon Tournament on May 21st.
"We'd like to start the season with about 24 senior pros, which would tend to indicate that, possibly, as many as six could go out," Jewell said. "We've taken the view that we wanted to have the new players in place early to get them bedded in. Now the hard work starts on trying to move six or seven out to make sure the balance of the squad is right."
Derby is currently training in Holland, where they have nine new players and the expectation for more. They have already moved current players out at a loss trying to revamp the squad for their promotion campaign in The Championship.
Where that leaves Feilhaber is an open question. With the transfer window opening next week, he should be in a position to get offers from European clubs.
In other news, Oguchi Onyewu is expected to start the season somewhere other than Standard Liege, with rumors linking him with the Bundesliga and the Premier League.
