WASHINGTON, DC (Oct 2, 2008) USSoccerPlayers -- Oguchi Onyewu's Standard Leige finished off the second leg of their series with Tim Howard's Everton with another shock result. Following their 2-2 draw in Liverpool, Everton went to Maurice Dufranse Stadium trying to prove a class distinction.
Instead, it was Standard once again making a serious statement to the rest of the UEFA Cup field. With Onyewu and Howard starting as usual, Axel Witsel got the opener for Leige in the 21st minute, with Phil Jagielka equalizing in the 66th. Milan Jovanovic converted a 78th minute penalty to seal the win.
"The players played very well tonight," Everton manager David Moyes said. "We did very well up to 25 yards out and then it was hard to get through them and that would be the only bit I could fault them for."
Everton were the only English club not to advance on Thursday.
Aston Villa's 1-1 draw with Liteks Lovetch was enough to put Villa through to the next round. Brad Friedel made two saves, but couldn't stop Wilfried Niflore's 53rd minute penalty. Brad Guzan took his normal spot on the bench as Friedel's backup.
"We had opportunities to put it beyond them but sometimes in football it doesn't happen," Villa manager Martin O'Neill said. "I've had experience of these things. Then there's always a risk and at 1-1 it was slightly uncomfortable. But overall, over the two legs we deserved to get through and I am absolutely delighted.
Carlos Bocanegra's Rennes went out on the away goals rule after losing their second leg to Twente. The clubs drew 2-2 on aggregate. Bocanegra was in the starting eleven, subbed off in the 84th minute for Sylvain Wiltord.
