The Freedom can't take advantage with their second chance at home and Chicago opened the Women's Professional Soccer schedule at Toyota Park.
Boston 3 - Washington 1
A lively second half denied Washington their fist home win in two attempts. Kelly Smith put Boston up in the 56th minute with the first penalty kick in WPS history. Washington answered right back through Lori Lindsey on the hour mark. Washington got their chance from the spot in the 72nd minute, but Breakers keeper Kristin Luckenbill denied the Freedom's Abby Wambach. More from Boston, with Christine Latham scoring in the 76th minute and Angela Hucles making it 3-1 Breakers in the 81st. “I’m proud of this team," Boston coack Tony DiCiccio said. "The best teams find a way to get results even when not playing their best, and I thought we did that tonight.”
FC Gold Pride 0 - Los Angeles 1
Marta got the only goal of the game when she scored two minutes into the second half. “Aly (Wagner) gave me a great pass and put me in a position to score," Marta said. "We’ve connected several times during training and it was great that we got one today that was the difference in the game.”
Sky Blue FC 0 - Chicago 0
A scoreless draw on opening night at Toyota Park, with Chicago dominating the offense. 19 total shots for the Red Stars, with seven on goal. Sky Blue FC took eight shots, putting three on goal. Chicago also dominated on penalties, 12 to 5. Sky Blue used Karen Bardsley in net for the first half, replacing here with Jenni Branam in the second. Together, they recorded six saves. "Bardsley got back spasms at halftime," Sky Blue coach Ian Sawyer said.... "We didn’t really want to (make a switch), but we were forced to do it.”
