27-year-old Shalke 04 midfielder Jermaine Jones has given notice to Germany's DFB that he will no longer be appearing for the German National Team and has changed his international registration to the United States. Jones has three caps, all in friendlies. Under FIFA rules, he is allowed to switch Federations because he has never played in a competitive game for Germany. His father is American and Jones holds a US passport.
"We have often emphasized how much we like to welcome many players with backgrounds of immigration into the Germany National Team," Germany coach Oliver Bierhoff said. "This reflects the development of society in our country, but we have always emphasized that anybody who wears the DFB colors must identify with the National Team and Germany. If a player does not see things this way, then that is his decision and we respect it."
Jones played in the German youth National Team system and is known for his high-profile image. He was born in in Frankfurt and has spent his entire life in Germany.
