Major League Soccer had no answers home or away for Mexican clubs in the CONCACAF Champions League on Wednesday. The Columbus Crew now have a decidedly negative goal differential after losing 5-0 to Cruz Azul in Mexico City. Jaime Lozano opened the scoring in the third minute, and the Crew were down by two when Ramon Nunez scored five minutes later. Chad Marshall turned the ball into his own net a minute into the second-half, and it was Lozano again in the 81st. Marshall was credited with his second own goal in the 87th. Cruz Azul keeper Yosgart Gutierrez needed one save for the shutout.
At RFK Stadium, the score wasn't so lopsided but the result was the same with DC United losing 3-1 to Toluca. Vladimir Marin opened the scoring in the fifth minute for Toluca, with Chris Pontious equalizing two minutes into the second-half. Hector Raul Mancilla scored in the 78th and 85th minutes to put the game away.
Houston drew 1-1 with Aribe Unido at the Estadio Armando Dely Valdes in a game marked by red cards. Aribe Unido were down a man 11 minutes in when David Daniels was sent off. Houston joined them at ten men in the 55th, when Corey Ashe was shown the door. Arabe Unido lost Omar Camarg to a second yellow in the 67th, with Houston's Kei Kamara scoring two minutes later. Riding that 1-0 lead, Houston lost Andrew Hainault in the 81st to a second yellow and the Stuart Holden in the 87th seconds after picking up a yellow. Playing nine vs eight, Aribe Unido got a 90th minute equalizer through Orlando Rodriguez.
Also on Wednesday, Marathon beat San Juan Jabloteh 3-1 at the Olimpico Metropolotano in San Pedro Sula. Mario Barrios scored for Marathon in the 10th, with San Juan equalizing from the penalty spot when Noel Williams scored just before halftime. Leaving it late in the second-half, Marathon's Mauricio Sabillon scored in the 86th and Walter Martinez made it 3-1 in the 90th minute.
