Javier Saviola opened the scoring in the 14th, and that 1-0 lead carried into the half. Benfica hit hard early in the second, with Oscar Rene Cardozo scoring in the 47th and 48th. Anderson Luis Da Silva Luisao made it 4-0 four minutes later. It was Saviola again in the 83rd to finish off the scoring. Benfica keeper Jacobi Julio Cesar needed one save for the shutout.
"I have said to the players that this is a different competition and we have had two wins and a defeat so it's not that bad," Everton manager David Moyes said. "It wasn't a second string defence, it was playing out of their position. We put out the best we had and the players did as well as they could. I only have praise for the players tonight."
At Craven Cottage, Fulham looked to be good for a 1-0 win after Brede Hangeland scored in the 24th-minute, but they couldn't hold on down a man to AS Roma, drawing 1-1. Stephen Kelly was sent off for Fulham in the 76th and Roma missed a 79th-minute penalty. Marco Andreolli finally equalized in stoppage time. The point has Fulham second to FC Basel in Group E. Clint Dempsey was on the bench for Fulham as they chose to rest several regulars. Ed Johnson wasn't in the squad."They bought their best players on, and we were short of numbers and we were short for a corner - which led to them equalising with the very last kick of the game," Fulham manager Roy Hodgson said.
