The United States bounced back from their opening game loss, beating Malawi 1-0 on Thursday at Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano, Nigeria. In a game dominated by the USA, it would take 54 minutes for them to get a goal. Alex Shinsky put a rebound through the legs of Malawi keeper Cuthbert Seengwa for the game winner.
"It was a really important match for us, and it feels great to have scored an important goal," Shinsky said. "It was a bit surprising to see it go in the back of the net, but when the ball was in the air I was just focusing on hitting the ball. A little luck was on my side, so that felt good. A goal is a goal and I was really happy about it."
Malawi had their moments, forcing US keeper Earl Edwards to make seven saves and ending with a higher shots on goal percentage than the USA (7 of 9 to 11 of 17). The United States dominated on corner kicks, 11 to 2 but was unable to convert. Relying on the long ball, Malawi was called offside 18 times to the USA's two.
The United States finishes Group E play on Sunday against the United Arab Emirates.
"Today was a tough game, we were both motivated teams on the field," US coach Wilmer Cabrera said. "The United States record against African teams isn’t so good. But today we moved the ball and worked hard and we got the goal we needed. Now we have a chance to move to the next stage, and now we have to focus on UAE because that is a very important game for us."
