The United States Under-20 National Team had a tough time in their final group stage game, falling to Korea 30. Korea opened the scoring in the 23rd through Kim Young-Gwon. Kim Bo-Kyung made it 2-0 in the 42nd. Koo Ja-Cheol finished off the scoring from the penalty spot in the 75th minute. The United States finished with ten men after Ike Opara was sent off in the 74th.
Korea keeper Kim Seung-Gyu needed one save for the shutout, with the US defense standing up to four of Korea's seven shots on goal.
“First we congratulate Korea, because clearly today they were the better team and deserved the three points and to move on,” US coach Thomas Rongen said. “Unfortunately in today’s game, to be really frank, technically and tactically Korea was superior to the US. You just have to move on. We’re bitterly disappointed in the result. We came in with high expectations. We always set the bar high. But at the end of the day, we just weren’t good enough to get the result that we needed.”
The United States now waits on Saturday's Group E and F results to see if they can advance as a third-place wildcard.
