Benfica are clear at the top of the Group I table by three points and a +8 goal differential. Everton are in second on six points and a -2 differential. They lead the third and fourth-place teams by two points.
"We are trying to talk about the players in the team and give them some confidence and some of them did okay," Everton manager David Moyes said. "There were one or two good performances."
At Rome's Stadio Olimpico, Roma trailed Fulham 1-0 into the half after Diomansy Kamara converted a 19th-minute penalty. Unfortunately for Fulham, they were playing a man down four minutes in the second when Eric Nevland was sent off. Roma took advantage when John Arne Riise scored in the 69th and Stefano Okaka Chuka followed with the game winner in the 76th minute.
The result drops Fulham to third in Group E, trailing Roma by two points and group leaders FC Basel by four. Clint Dempsey went the full ninety for Fulham and had three shots. Ed Johnson wasn't in the squad.
"You cannot be happy in the face of injustice," Fulham manager Roy Hodgson. "I accept the situation because the referee makes the decision, but I'm not happy.... "This defeat leaves us struggling in the group," Fulham manager Roy Hodgson said. "Every time you get players sent off you have players suspended for three matches which means, at this rate, I would need to have a squad of 60 players. Unfortunately, this defeat takes things out of our hands a little bit. We could win the last two games and still not qualify."
Did Not Play: Dominic Cervi was on the nech for Celtic's 0-0 draw with Hamburg. The result keeps Celtic bottom of Group C, two points behind Rapid Vienna and five points back of Hamburg in second-place.
