1. Making Possession Count: Slovakia had limited opportunities and never really threatened the United States goal from the run of play in the first-half and early in the second. On the other end, too many of the US chances ended up directly at the keeper. Whether it was from distance or on the run with time in the box, the shot selection wasn't causing enough problems for Slovakia keeper Jan Mucha. In the second-half, the US had plenty of time on the ball but couldn't turn that into shots on goal.
2. One Forward Problems: Slovakia attacked with one forward and space between him and the midfielders. It didn't lead to an onslaught of offense, but it did cause positioning problems for the United States. That usually meant isolation on the left side. Shifting defenders over would potentially free up the Slovak midfielders. On the replay of the penalty sequence, you see US players positioned around the box alongside their marks who aren't running into the box. By the time Carlos Bocanegra comes over in support, it was too late.
3. No Surprise Spector: Sure, Jonathan Spector is normally a right back with West Ham United, but he can play anywhere in defense. His preferred position has always seemed to be in the center, and he knows what's required to play there. He's not someone who tries to make the position adapt to him. Instead, he makes the changes, doesn't drift, and plays like a central defender.
4. Limit Desperation Marking: There's still a tendency to make the first play in the box the only play. Trust the keeper and the other defenders and don't give your mark any reason to see if he can draw a penalty. Seems basic enough, but in the moment it's difficult at any level. Most players opt to do whatever is necessary to make the stop. Sometimes, that's not the best move.
5. Don't Expect A Crowd: Friendly international soccer apparently isn't much of a sell in Bratislava. Rainy conditions, but the main stand was partially covered and not close to capacity. The European expectation is usually overwhelming interest, but that's not always the case on the night.
