"I'm really pleased we got the three points because they were an important three points," Everton manager David Moyes said. "We probably played better here against Birmingham and we probably played better against Sunderland. I did think we were excellent in the first half especially and created plenty of opportunities but at this moment in time the final pass, the final ball, the finish isn't there."
At Stamford Bridge, Clint Dempsey started and went the full-ninety for Fulham in their 2-1 loss to Chelsea. Zoltan Gera had Fulham up four minutes in, but Didier Drogba equalized in the 73rd-minute and Chris Smalling put the ball in the back of his own net two minutes later.
"My disappointment is that such a hard working performance which saw us defend so well against a rampant Chelsea team with many quality players didn't get any reward," Fulham manager Roy Hodgson said. "I'd like to have seen the players come off the pitch with at least a point to reward the quality of their play.'' Eddie Johnson wasn't in the squad for Fulham.
Jonathan Spector was a 19th-minute substitute for West Ham United, who lost their London derby with Spurs 2-0. Spector was the second substitute West Ham had to make early, with manager Gianfranco Zola having to reset his defense. "Losing them early didn't help and it restricts your options in the game especially when you've played two days before," Zola said. "The players on the pitch coped well, they were very good."
Marcus Hahnemann was in goal for Wolverhampton, who lost 3-0 at home to Manchester City. Hahnemann was yellow-carded in the 71st-minute.
In the Championship, Jay DeMerit was in the starting eleven for Watford, who drew 2-2 with Bristol City. Bristol went up 2-1 just before halftime, but Lewin Nyatanga was sent off in the 69th-minute. John Eustace scored Wednesday's equalizer in second-half stoppage time.
Frank Simek and Sheffield Wednesday will need to wait a little lover for Blackpool, with the game postponed due to a frozen pitch. Wednesday manager Sean McAuley told the club's official site: "This is a huge loss for us because we took so many positives from the Newcastle game and we wanted to get straight back out there and play another game. The players were well prepared and we were all really looking forward to the game."
