Highly-rated US Under-17 player Luis Gil joined Major League Soccer on Monday, when he was allocated to Kansas City. His time with the Wizards lasted a day, with the club trading him to Real Salt Lake. Gil had expressed a preference for Seattle or Salt Lake when he signed with the League. In return, Kansas City got an international roster slot, a second-round 2011 SuperDraft pick, and 25% of any transfer fee should the League sell Gil to a foreign club.
“Real Salt Lake provides a prime environment for the development of young players,” Salt Lake GM Garth Lagerwey said. “The track record that Jason Kreis and our coaching staff have of nurturing talent is exemplary, and the dream of venturing onto the Rio Tinto Stadium turf will surely inspire Luis to work hard every day in training. We have a talented, veteran team and we have no expectation that any young player will easily crack our championship lineup, though our hope is that Luis is eventually able to earn minutes in the years ahead."
Also on Tuesday, Kansas City announced they had failed to come to terms with midfielder Claudio Lopez and he would be leaving the club. “We would have liked to have Claudio back in 2010, but unfortunately it became clear early in the contract negotiations that we could not give him what he desired,” Wizards Manager Peter Vermes said. "We thank Claudio for his two years of service here in Kansas City. He was a consummate professional and set a good example for the young players on our team both on and off the field.
