Harrisburg 1 - New York 0 AET
Though New York played some regulars, they couldn't find the offense in Harrisburg. Scoreless in regulation, Harrisburg's Dominic Oppong got the game's only goal in the 117th minute to knock the Red Bulls out of the Cup.
An 84th minute red card to Rochester's Felix Motagalvan and a stoppage time winner from Steven Lenhart ended the Rhinos' Open Cup campaign at Crew Stadium. Columbus took the lead in the 30th minute through Andy Iro. Rochester got an equalizer when Darren Spicer scored in the 69th minute.
Houston 1 - Miami 0
Tally Hall needed 7 saves for the shutout against visiting Miami, and Houston got the game's only goal from Mike Chabala in the 80th minute. What was supposed to be a run through for a more attack oriented Houston ended with few opportunities and an injury to forward Luis Angel Landin. In Houston's new look 352, Landin was playing in midfield when he was forced out with an injured knee in the 39th minute. The extent of the injury won't be known until Wednesday.
Chicago 0 - Charleston 0 (0-3 on penalties)
Tough night for the home team, with Chicago unable to find the back of the net at Toyota Park. Though their offensive stats look strong, putting 8 of 18 shots on goal to Charleston's 2 from 10, their scoring touch let them down all night. That was made evident with the game going to penalties. Chicago missed three in a row while Charleston made their three to advance to the next round.
LA 2 - St Louis 0
Things didn't get any easier for the troubled AC St Louis in Open Cup play. A team that released their star player Steve Ralston and parted ways with their coach never really threatened the best club in Major League Soccer. Chris Klein opened the scoring in the 69th minute and Juninho made it 2-0 in the 80th. Galaxy backup keeper Josh Saunders kept the clean sheet with 3 saves.
Chivas USA 1 - Austin 0
Using an alternative home venue at Cal State Fullerton, Chivas USA only needed a 12th minute goal from Jesus Padilla to advance to the Open Cup quarterfinals. This was Chivas USA's first Open Cup win since '05, three years before the Austin Aztex existed. Zach Thornton needed 4 saves for the shutout.
"I thought we did well against a good team," Chivas USA coach Martin Vasquez said. "I like the way we approached the game. We were serious, we were disciplined, and we created some good chances. That’s all positive at this time where we need to reinforce and have something to build on."
