Toronto FC pulled off an opening game surprise in Group A, beating Cruz Azul at BMO Filed. With Toronto having to reshuffle their offense, they got a 3rd minute goal from Martin Sirac and another from Mista in the 43rd to take a 2-0 lead into the half. Jon Conway almost had the shutout, but Christian Gimenez scored in the 89th. Both teams finished with 6 shots on goal and 3 corners, but Toronto committed 19 fouls to Cruz Azul’s 9. Toronto travels to Panama to play Arabe Unido on August 24th in their second group stage game.
