Game one of the PSV Eindhoven – Rangers Europa League Round of 16 series ended scoreless at the Philipsstadion on Thursday. Maurice Edu went the distance for Rangers with backup goalkeeper Neil Alexander getting a surprise start and an easy clean sheet.
"When we look over the game Neil Alexander has not had a save to make while their keeper made an excellent save from Kyle Bartley,” Rangers manager Walter Smith said. "It would have been a nice one to get if Kyle's header had gone in but in fairness to PSV they might have scored if their finishing had been better. They had two headers for example that they might have done better with but we are obviously delighted they didn't.
FC Twente had no problem at home to Zenit St Petersburg, beating them 3-0. Luuk de Jong opened the scoring in the 25th minute, carrying that lead into halftime. Denny Landzaat scored in the 56th and de Jong got on the board again with a stoppage time goal. Oguchi Onyewu was on the bench for Twente.
