San Jose 1 – Chivas USA 2
Chivas USA came back on he road for their first win of the season and extend their unbeaten streak to four games. Chris Wondolowski opened the scoring for San Jose in the 16th minute in front of 10,525 at Buck Shaw Stadium. Alejandro Moreno equalized just before halftime, with Mariano Trujillo scoring the winning goal in the 85th minute.
“The win was going to come,” Chivas USA coach Robin Fraser said. “I’m more happy for the guys because they’ve worked incredibly hard in the last four months so for them to come and to get the first win on the road it’s a huge a testament to what they have done.”
Toronto 1 – Columbus 1
In a game that didn’t produce a lot of chances, both teams ended up with a point at BMO Field. Toronto’s Tony Tchani got the first goal in the 41st minute, scoring with one of only two shots on frame for Toronto. His goal celebration ended with him exiting early after being shown a second yellow card. Emilio Renteria equalized for the Crew in the 48th, with Columbus finishing with three shots on goal.
“It is a pity that we gave away the game, because we started very well, and then in the end when you have 10 players it is going to be very difficult because Columbus has a good team,” Toronto coach Aron Winter said.
Dallas 2 – Vancouver 1
Alain Rochat opened the scoring for the home side in the 24th minute at Empire Field. Dallas had a quick opportunity for an equalizer, but David Ferreira missed a penalty in the 27th. They would wait until George John scored in the 53rd to level the score. Ferreira had to be stretchered off after injuring his leg in the 71st minute in what turned out to be a fractured right ankle. Eric Avila scored the winning goal in the 82nd minute for Dallas’s second win of the season.
New England 3 – Kansas City 2
The Revolution and Sporting KC traded goals early, with Marco Perovic scoring for New England in the 12th minute and Kei Kamara equalizing two minutes later. It would take awhile for a second goal, with Kamara putting Kansas City ahead from the penalty spot in the 68th minute. Shalrie Joseph equalized for New England in the 72nd minute, and Sporting KC went a man down two minutes later when Aurelien Collin was sent off. Rajko Lekic headed in the winning goal in the 83rd for the first goal of his MLS career. Benny Feilhaber made his first appearance for New England, starting and playing the full ninety.
“You see the quality that he has and that affects our position as well, because they don’t know whether to stand off or to close him down,” New England coach Steve Nicol said of Feilhaber. “And obviously with his teammates, it’s good knowing that you’re giving a guy the ball who 99 times of out of 100, he ain’t losing it. So he made a big impact tonight.”
Chicago 1 – Houston 1
Diego Chaves put Chicago up 17 minutes in at Toyota Park on Saturday night. With both teams putting three shots on goal, it took Houston awhile for one of theirs to count. Andrew Hainault’s header in the 83rd minute split the points. Chicago now has two wins and a five game unbeaten streak. Chicago has one only once this season.
LA 3 – Portland 0
Landon Donovan’s return to the Galaxy lineup was bad news for the Timbers at the Home Depot Center. Donovan assisted on Chad Barrett’s 3rd minute opener, converted a penalty four minutes later, and headed in a goal in the 67th minute. Galaxy coach Bruce Arena subbed him off after his goal.
“I could care less about scoring,” Donovan said. “I want to win. I’m not as much of a scorer anymore. I think you guys are seeing that with both the US team and this team. That part of my game has not been the same as when I was younger. I want to win. And, it feels good to win.”
