Toronto's Nick Soolsma converted a penalty kick in the 54th minute, and that was the difference for Wednesday night's MLS game. Stefan Frei picked up the shutout in front of 19,816 at BMO Field. Vancouver left several regulars on the bench to start the game, giving the appearance of a team focused on Saturday's Canadian championship game - also against Toronto - and advancing to the CONCACAF Champions League.
"Yeah, I think for them at this moment the game for Saturday, if you saw the players on their bench, that the game on Saturday is more important than the one this evening," Toronto coach Aron Winter said. "For me, its always important, every game, if you lose like they have done this evening this means that in the coming days when they are together this unmotivates the players for the next game. I don't worry about it because its not my problem, it doesn't matter to me if they play the whole team with their best players or the team they played with this evening."
Toronto announced earlier in the day that they had signed two designated players, Torsten Frings and Danny Koevermans as they attempt to restart their season. The club is currently 6th in the Eastern Conference, level on points with DC at 18, but with 19 games played to DC's 15.
