New York 2 – Dallas 2
The New York Red Bulls needed a late goal to salvage a point at home. New York took the lead in the 39th minute when Juan Agudelo scored, and that held into halftime. Dallas got a Marvin Chavez equalizer in the 51st, and it was Chavez again in the 78th minute. Thierry Henry equalized for NY in the 85th, five minutes after losing Dane Richards to a second yellow.
“Coming back one goal down, one man down into the game, you can always say we came back,” Henry said. “But we were in control of the game and again, out of nowhere, they scored a goal. The first one took a deflection, not as big as the one we scored, but at the end of the day they played better than us in the second half.”
Columbus 1 – Portland 0
Eddie Gaven scored the game’s only goal off a deflection in the 79th minute. the win puts the Crew level on points with Philadelphia at the top of the Eastern Conference, but with two additional games played. With Will Hesmer injured, Andy Gruenebaum picked up the shutout for Columbus.
Kansas City 4 – Toronto 2
Kansas City got two goals from Kei Kamara in the 28th and 34th minutes, and it was 3-0 when Omar Bravo scored in the 37th. Toronto got a goal back through Danny Koevermans in the 50th, but it was Bravo again in the 64th minute. Ryan Johnson scored for Toronto in the 72nd, but that was it for the offense on a night where the temperature was listed at 100 degrees.
“It was good,” Kamara said. “I didn’t know if I was gonna play. I woke up this morning with a tight ankle and the trainer kept telling me I should rest it and I said ‘no way, I got a feeling about this game’. Whatever happens, I’m gonna limp and come in.”
Colorado 2 – New England 2
Another team coming up with a short-handed equalizer, this time denying the Rapids a chance to take six points in one week. New England went up on the road when Benny Feilhaber scored in the 25th minute. The Revs’ Chris Tierney was sent off for denying a goal scoring opportunity in the 64th minute, and Caleb Foran converted the ensuing penalty to bring Colorado level. The Rapids were in the lad by the 82nd when Kosuke Kimura scored. Shalrie Joseph converted a stoppage time penalty to split the points.
“The disappointment and the frustration is of course, with ten men, rightly so, they’re very direct and they want to get it in the danger zone, and we deal with it poorly,” Colorado coach Gary Smith said. “No challenge on the first header, and the second phase ball, they’re onto quicker, which was, with what was maybe four minutes on the clock, pretty difficult to swallow, I have to admit.”
Salt Lake 4 – San Jose 0
With San Jose thinking a call might go their way in what replays showed as Salt Lake forward Alvaro Saborio falling in the box in the 60th minute ended up a red card for the Earthquakes Bobby Burling. With the referee initially red carding a San Jose player who wasn’t near Saborio, things grew heated. Saborio converted the penalty in the 63rd and scored a second goal in the 75th minute. Kyle Beckerman made it 3-0 in the 78th and Jamison Olave finished off the scoring in the 83rd minute.
“One-hundred percent he didn’t touch him,” San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch said. “He absolutely did not touch him, I was standing right there. The guy could have shot before he went down if he wanted to. He cut back against two defenders, neither Bobby or Brad (Ring) touched him at all, whatsoever. We honestly thought when the referee came running, we were getting ready to play a free kick cause we thought it would be a yellow card for diving. It was unbelievable.”
Chivas USA 3 – Houston 0
Justin Braun was the story at The Home Depot Center, scoring a hat-trick for Chivas USA against the Dynamo. Braun got his first goal in the 31st, making it 2-0 in the 40th. Houston went a man down when Je-Vaughn Watson was shown a second yellow card in the 70th minute, and it was Braun again with an 86th minute goal.
“It’s nice to have gotten another hat-trick,” Braun said. “But the most important thing is that the team came out and played well collectively and got the three points, which is what we needed.”
In friendly play, the Chicago Fire lost to Manchester United 3-1. It was the same score at RFK, with Everton beating DC United. Real Madrid won at Lincoln Financial Field, 2-1 over Philadelphia.
