The Bundesliga clubs started their season early with domestic cup games, while Herculez Gomez scored in the second week of the Mexican Apertura season.
In the DFB Pokal first round, the Bundesliga clubs got to shake off the pre-season and the 2.Bundesliga clubs got a nice break from league play by walloping overmatched opposition. Timmy Chandler went the distance for FC Nurnberg in a 5-1 win over Arminia Bielefeld on the road at the SchucoArena. The home side actually scored first, but a quick Markus Feulner hat trick (26', 35,' 39th) and goals from Robert Mak (64') and Tomas Pekhart (71') gave Nurnberg the comfortable win. Chandler picked up an assist. Also on Saturday, Matt Taylor had a hat-trick in SC Paderborn's 10-0 win over Ahlen. Two other Paderborn players had two goals each.
It was as easy for Steve Cherundolo and Hannover 96, beating FC Anker Wismar 6-0. Cherundolo subbed on in the 65th minute at Stadion an der Lohmuhle with Hannover already up four goals. Mohamed Abdellaoue scored in the 12th and 25th minutes followed by Lars Stindl's goals in the 34th and 36th. Moritz Stoppelkamp became the third Hannover player with back-to-back goals, scoring in the 71st and 76th minutes.
Jermaine Jones made his official return to Schalke 04 after a disagreement with the prior coach had him spending half the season in the Premier League. Schalke beat FC Teninggen 11-1 at the badenova-Stadion. Tenigen's goal came in the 20th minute, but Schalke were already up three goals and would score a fourth two minutes later. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored four times (3', 22', 39', 64'). Raul(13' and 32'), Lewis Holtby (57' and '75), and Mario Gavranovic (70' and 79') each scored twice. Kyriakos Papadopoulos (7') also got a goal. Jones subbed on at halftime. Edson Buddle was an 87th minute substitute for FC Ingolstadt, beating FC Oberneula 4-1.
Scandinavia, and Michael Parkhurst took his usual place in Nordsjaelland's starting lineup in a 2-0 loss to FC Copenhagen. Alejandro Bedoya went the distance for Orebro, beating Gefle 1-0 on a 28th minute Jose Paulinho goal. Bedoya was yellow carded in the 38th minute. Mix Diskerud also went the full 90 for Stabaek, beating IK Start 4-1 in Norway.
Scotland, and Maurice Edu went 83 minutes for Rangers in a 2-0 win over St Johnstone in week 2 of the Scottish Premier League season. Steven Naismith scored in the 31st minute followed by Nikica Jelavic in the 50th.
"There was a massive improvement from the previous two games and we started a lot better than we have been," Rangers manager Ally McCoist said. "We were more positive and looked much livelier and sharper, creating a lot of good chances to score."
In the Primera, Herculez Gomez scored for U.A.G. in a 2-1 loss to San Luis. Gomez's headed in a 50th minute equalizer, but U.A.G. gave up a stoppage time penalty that San Luis converted for the win. U.A.G.'s Juan Leano would be red carded later in stoppage time. In a battle of National Teamers Abroad clubs, DaMarcus Beasley started for Puebla and Jose Francisco Torres subbed on for Pachuca in the 82nd minute in a 2-2 draw. Puebla was two goals up by the 32nd minute with Beasley picking up an assist. Pachuca answered back in the 69th and equalized in the 83rd just after Beasley was yellow carded.
