Jozy Altidore got things started as well as could've been hoped for in his first appearance in an AZ Alkmaar shirt. Subbing on in the 65th minute, he scored the third goal in AZ's 3-1 win over PSV Eindhoven at the AFAS Stadium. Maarten Martens opened the scoring for AZ, with Nick Viergever making it 2-0 in the 40th. PSV got their only goal just before halftime. Altidore was yellow carded in the 88th minute.
Friday saw two Americans get goals. In Belgium, Sacha Kljestan converted a penalty in Anderlecht's 3-1 win over Mechelen for their first win of the Jupiler League season. Mix Diskerud took his regular place in the Stabaek starting lineup, scoring in the 2-1 win over Fredrikstad.
The Bundesliga season opened over the weekend, with Jermaine Jones going the distance for Schalke 04 in a 3-0 loss to VfB Stuttgart. Stuttgart opened the scoring in the 37th minute, picking up the other two goals in the 56th and 89th. Timmy Chandler also went the full 90, with Nurnberg beating Hertha Berlin 1-0. Tomas Pekhart scored the game's only goal in the 80th minute. A league down, Edson Buddle subbed on in the 83rd minute for Ingolstadt in a 4-1 loss to Fortuna Dusseldorf. Moritz Hartmann scored for Ingolstadt to cut the lead to 2-1 in the 53rd minute, but they found themselves down 3-1 just a minute later.
Carlos Bocanegra started the season in is regular role in St Etienne's back line, beating Bordeaux 2-1 to start the Ligue 1 season.
Denmark, and Michael Parkhurst went the distance for Nordsjaelland in a 2-1 win over Silkeborg. Chris Rolfe went 81 minutes for AaB in a 3-3 draw with Horsens. Clarence Goodson started for Brondby in a 2-1 loss to Odense BK at Fionia Park.
Maurice Edu got the start for Rangers in a friendly against Chelsea, but he had to exit at the half with a left calf strain. Rangers lost 3-1 in front of 47,379 at Ibrox. In England's League One, Frank Simek went the distance as his Carlisle United got shutout by Notts County 3-0.
In Mexico, DaMarcus Beasley played the full 90 for Puebla in a 2-1 loss to Chiapas. Puebla converted a 4th minute penalty, but that was it for the offense. Chiapas equalized in the 31st and Puebla was reduced to ten men in the 43rd minute. Chiapas saw red in the 62nd minute, scoring the winner in the 73rd. Herculez Gomez went the distance for U.A.G. in a 1-0 home loss to Tigres.
