Los Angeles Galaxy player/assistant coach Gregg Berhalter is dropping the player part of his title at the end of the season, retiring after 18 years.
“This was not an easy decision for me to make but I feel that the timing is right for me to close this chapter of my career and begin to focus on the next stage as I look to continue my career in coaching,” Berhalter said in a press statement.
At National Team level, Berhalter had 43 caps making his debut in 1994. He played in the 2002 World Cup and was in the squad for the 2006 World Cup.
Berhalter made his professional debut with FC Zwolle in Holland's second division in 1994, starting a European career that included two more Dutch clubs, England's Crystal Palace, and Germany's Energie Cottbus and 1860 Munich. He signed with Major League Soccer and the LA Galaxy for the 2009 season.
