Houston 1 - Chicago 1
Things stay competitive in the Eastern Conference, with Houston unable to hold onto a lead at home. Colin Clark put the Dynamo up in the 33rd minute with Dominic Oduro equalizing in the 43rd. Houston finished with five shots on goal from 14 taken. Chicago put four on goal from 10 taken.
"It was a frustrating afternoon to be 1-0 up and have a good chance to go 2-0 up and possibly put the game away," Houston coach Dominic Kinnear said. "Then you give them a goal. In the second half we put ourselves in great spots in the final third. It’s just one of those days where our crosses were off enough, our shots were off enough and it leads to a frustrating afternoon."
New England 1 - Seattle 2
Another Eastern Conference club who couldn't hold onto a lead at home, only this time that lead only held for a minute. Diego Fernandez had the Revs ahead in the 35th minute, with Fredy Montero equalizing in the 36th. Montero also scored the 48th minute winner.
"I don’t think it was a fun game, or a beautiful game, but it was the result we needed. We are happy about that," Montero said.
Toronto 1 - NY 1
And yet another Eastern Conference club attempting to hold onto a lead at home. This time it was Toronto, up a goal when Danny Koevermans scored in the 50th minute. Thierry Henry equalized for New York in the 88th minute.
"I think we had so many chances to come back into the game, we didn’t, but then we came back at the end of the game," Henry said. "It was an important point for us to get into the playoffs."
Colorado 1 - Dallas 0
Drew Moor scored the game's only goal in the 26th minute, with the Rapids playing a man down after Miguel Comminges was sent off in the 74th. Matt Pickens only needed two saves for the shutout.
"Scoring early goals always gives you confidence, especially when it’s the first one," Moor said. "I thought we showed great character last week, coming back after going down a goal. This week we showed character the other way, by protecting a lead, which we’ve had trouble doing at times throughout the season."
San Jose 1 - Kansas City 1
Our second game on Saturday where the goals were a minute apart, and once again it was the home side unable to hold onto that short-lived lead. Chris Wondolowski scored for the Earthquakes in the 85th minute and it was 1-1 in the 86th when Teal Bunbury equalized for Sporting.
"To have a 1-0 lead in the 85th minute and concede a goal in five seconds is not good," San Jose coach Frank Yallop said. "However, I thought we played well again tonight. We played some bright football, especially in the first half. We weathered the storm a bit early in the second half and we started to drive on the last 20 minutes. I think we deserved to have the lead, but we have to finish those games.”
LA 2 - Salt Lake 1
Real Salt Lake's third loss in a row is also their only explainable one. This time, it wasn't a lopsided loss against a playoff hopeful. Playing the best team in Major League Soccer, RSL opened the scoring in the 45th minute through Fabian Espindola. Chad Barrett equalized for LA in the 59th, and LA got an unlikely winner from a Salt Lake own goal in the 72nd minute.
“Obviously we didn’t lose by 3 or 4 goals," RSL coach Jason Kreis said. "I wanted improvement, I wanted a collective team effort and I wanted a team that showed a little bit more discipline, more difficult to break down than we have been in the last two games and we got all that. We didn’t get the result that I had hoped for but we got a lot of hard work from the guys and we got a lot of sense of improvement."
Columbus 2 - DC 1
Only in the Eastern Conference could ending a six-game winless streak mean taking 2nd-place, and that's where the Crew find themselves after coming back against United. Daniel Woolard put DC up in the 37th minute, with a DC own goal equalizing for Columbus in the 48th. Eddie Gaven scored the winner in the 63rd minute.
“If we could have kept it 1-0 for a little while longer I think it would have turned out alright for us," DC forward Charlie Davies said. "We’ve got four games left now and now Vancouver’s a must win, and we got three East opponents so every game’s a must win.”
Vancouver 0 - Portland 1
The Whitecaps couldn't get a win to reopen BC Place in front of 21,000 fans on Sunday. Kenny Cooper scored the game's only goal in the 25th minute. The win means the Timbers trail New York on goal differential for the final playoff spot.
Chivas USA 1 - Philadelphia 1
Philadelphia looked to have three points on the road after Justin Mapp scored in the 59th minute. Chivas USA's Juan Pablo Angel had other plans, equalizing in stoppage time to split the points. Chivas USA outshot Philadelphia 15 to 8, but only put three of those shots on frame to the Union's two.
