The story of the weekend for National Teamers was Clint Dempsey's 42nd minute goal with Fulham beating Wigan Athletic 2-0 at DW Stadium. Moussa Dembele scored Fulham's second goal in the 87th minute. Mark Schwarzer needed six saves for the shutout, with Fulham only putting three shots on frame.
"I'm happy we got the points today and I'm sure people back home in the States like to see me doing well…" Dempsey told his club's official site. "The funny thing is we've played some good football in the last few weeks and not got the results, whereas today we may not have played our best but we got the points. It's crazy how it works sometimes."
Sacha Kljestan also had a good weekend, picking up an assist and scoring in Anderlecht's 4-0 home win over Lierse SK. In Scotland, Maurice Edu and Carlos Bocanegra started in Rangers' 2-1 win over Aberdeen. Kyle Lafferty scored in the 58th minute and Nikica doubled the advantage from the penalty spot in the 70th minute. Aberdeen got on the board in the 82nd. Oguchi Onyewu went the distance for Sporting, beating Feirense 2-0. Feirense played a man down from the 55th minute. Ricky van Wolfswinkel opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 64th minute, with Stijn Schaars scoring in the 77th. In Holland, Jozy Altidore went 81 minutes for AZ in a 1-0 win over Heracles Almelo. Adam Maher scored the winner a minute from time. Serie A, and Michael Bradley's Chievo lost 4-1 to Siena. Chievo was down three goals when Davide Moscardelli scored their only goal in the 75th minute.
In the Premier League, Tim Howard was in goal for Everton's 1-0 loss to Manchester United. Brad Friedel took his regular spot in Tottenham's goal, getting a 3-1 win over fellow London club Queens Park Rangers. A league down, Jonathan Spector went the distance in Birmingham City's 0-0 draw with Brighton. Robbie Findley subbed on 10 minutes from time for Nottingham Forest in a 1-0 loss to Hull City.
Germany, and Timmy Chandler's Nurnberg had no luck against Bayern Munich, getting shutout 4-0. Bayern were in the lead two minutes in. Better news for Jermaine Jones, who went the full 90 for Schalke 04 beating Hoffenheim 3-1 with goals in the 28th, 73rd, and 76th minutes. A league down, Luis Robles and Karlsruhe were on the wrong side of a 5-1 loss to Dresden. Edson Buddle played 80 minutes for Ingolstadt, drawing 1-1 with Eintracht Frankfurt who needed a stoppage time goal to split the points.
SAS-Ligaen, and Clarence Goodson went the distance for Brondby, drawing 1-1 with Chris Rolfe's AaB. Rolfe assisted on the AaB goal. Michael Parkhurst subbed out three minutes from time for Nordsjaelland in a 1-0 loss to Lyngby. In Norway, Mix Diskerud got the start for Stabaek, drawing 0-0 away to Sogndal.
In Mexico, DaMarcus Beasley's Puebla beat Club America 3-2 at the Azteca Stadium. Club America led from the 2nd minute, with Luis Garcia equalizing for Puebla in the 41st. Puebla took the lead just before halftime, doubling it in the 81st with Garcia scoring his second goal of the game. America pulled a goal back three minutes from time but were unable to come up with an even later equalizer. Herculez Gomez played 81 minutes for U.A.G. who were shutout 2-0 by Cruz Azul. 16 games into the 2011 Apertura, Pachuca are 5th with Tigres in 7th, Puebla in 9th, U.A.G. in 15th, and Club America 17th.
