By Tony Edwards - San Jose, CA (Dec 29, 2011) US Soccer Players -- In this edition, Tony joins the rest of the staff in wondering why we're working the week between holidays before asking about Rob Stone's move to Fox Soccer, FIFA's latest deadline, and remembers what Cate meant to New England.
Does anyone who used to be on ESPN’s weekly MLS show MLS XtraTime still work for ESPN?
To be fair, I just remember Rob Stone and Jeff Bradley. Bradley is now a columnist for the Newark Star-Ledger focusing mainly on baseball, and Rob Stone announced on Twitter this week he is going to Fox. According to reports, Stone will be in the studio for Fox's high profile soccer games, including the Premier League game that will be shown prior to the start of the lengthy Super Bowl pregame show in February.
Who will play Wales in their tribute to manager Gary Speed?
Wales are planning an appropriate tribute to Speed, a legendary player for his country with 85 caps and their manager when he took his own life on November 27th. Who will be the opponent in what should be a cathartic celebration of Speed and his contributions to Welsh soccer on February 29th? The rumor is CONCACAF's own Costa Rica, and the reason is fitting.
When are we going to learn more about the ‘FIFA-collapse of ISL’ scandal?
January 23rd. Unless FIFA is ‘forced’ to delay publication of the documents involved in the case again. FIFA leadership claims it will not appeal a decision by a judge in Switzerland that there was no reason to delay publication. If Sepp Blatter is so concerned about cleaning up FIFA, why not publish the documents now?
Where would young Colombians rather play, Argentina or MLS?
MLS, according to Juan Pablo Angel. Angel also says that MLS is now an accepted route to the Colombian national team, when previously it was not.
Which player led the Revolution to their first title game?
Cate, who died this past week in a car accident at 38. An MLS All-Star and maybe the best player ever to wear #10 for the Revolution, Cate had eight goals and eight assists in 22 games in 2001, though it's hardly the standout on a resume that included beating Barcelona in the 1992 Intercontinental Cup as a member of Sao Paulo, winning the Copa Libertadores to get to that game, and playing in Serie A with Sampdoria.
