By Tony Edwards - San Jose, CA (Dec 27, 2011) US Soccer Players -- Tuesday's Questions, and Tony asks about Clint Dempsey's growing legacy with Fulham, an Old Firm derby date for the Americans at Rangers, and the Rapids' search for a new head coach. As always, let us know what you think or add some questions of your own.
What does Portland General Manager apparently like most about new Young Designated Player José Adolfo Valencia?
"The ability to develop within the organization and athleticism,” Portland GM Gavin Wilkinson told MLSsoccer.com. Timbers coach John Spencer cautioned against treating Valencia like an immediate answer, and all credit to him. Even designated players need to adjust to the quirks of MLS. With that in mind, when are we going to hear a club executive tell us they’ve signed a player who isn’t quick and his bench press won’t impress you, but in the attacking third he can pass and find space?
Where would Fulham be without Clint Dempsey?
Obviously, they have a number of quality players, but Dempsey leads the team in goals and assists. If the rumors are true and Bobby Zamora leaves in the January transfer window, even more responsibility will be placed on Dempsey’s shoulders. With US National Team coach Jurgen Klinsmann's repeated concerns over American players getting meaningful minutes in top-flight leagues, Dempsey has to be considered the prototype.
What’s going on in Scotland?
A big game for Bocanegra, Edu, and Bedoya tomorrow. Celtic is only one point back going into the game against Rangers. Still, even with a game in hand, third place Motherwell is 13 points back of Celtic. As usual, the title race is a Glasgow-only affair. Now for a way to actually see it live that doesn't require travelling to a pay-per-view establishment.
When would Paul Bravo like to announce a new coach for the Rapids?
This week. In an interview on MLSsoccer.com, Bravo says they are looking for someone with “working knowledge of league rules,” who also understands the draft process. It's interesting that the focus is on understanding MLS rather than pedigree from other leagues. Sure, MLS rules and regulations can be learned. But we've already seen a few coaches unable to make that adjustment.
How does 11 fit into 8?
It doesn't, but Peter Nowak isn’t too concerned. With their two most recent signings of (not young) Central American players, the Union now have 11 internationals on their roster, and only 8 international slots. Between opportunities to trade for more international slots, roster developments, visa issues, and the like, Nowak seem to think it will work out by roster compliance day, March 1. This isn’t necessarily fair to Nowak, but remember when MLS was in the business of developing American players?
