Clint Dempsey got the goal for Fulham in a surprising 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Juan Mata opened the scoring two minutes into the second-half, and it was Dempsey with the equalizer in the 56th. Chelsea put a dozen shots on goal to Fulham's five.
“We’ve had good results against Arsenal, Liverpool and Bolton recently and the only thing that’s been disappointing was the Manchester United game last week,” Fulham manager Martin Jol said. "I think today against Chelsea we showed again we can give the top sides a very good game."
Tim Howard was in goal for Everton, who needed a 51st minute penalty to split the points with Sunderland. Brad Guzan only needed a single save against Stoke City to finish 0-0 at the Britannia Stadium.
A league down, Jonathan Spector got the start for Birmingham City in a 1-1 draw with West Ham. It was West Ham taking the lead at St Andrews, scoring four minutes in. David Murphy equalized for Birmingham in the 81st minute, with Birmingham doubling West Ham's shots on goal 10 to 5. In League One, Frank Simek started for Carlisle in a 3-3 draw with PNE at Deepdale. Preston lost the lead twice before needing a stoppage time equalizer to split the points. Simek was yellow carded in the 73rd minute.
