Jozy Altidore got on the score sheet on what was otherwise a tough game for AZ. Altidore's club lost 5-1 to Heerenveen, ending an 11-game unbeaten streak. Altidore scored in the 20th minute to level the score at 1-1, but Heerenveen would be up a goal by halftime and scored three more in the second-half. The result leaves AZ in 1st-place with three points and a game in hand over PSV. Heerenveen are 6th in the Eredivisie.
After spending many months in a backup role, Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan saw action in a Premier League game. With Manchester United leading from a 20th minute goal, regular Villa starting keeper Shay Given was injured and forced out in the 38th minute. Guzan kept a clean sheet for the rest of the game.
"Shay has tweaked a hamstring and we hope it's a grade one which would mean a pretty swift recovery," Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish said. "Great credit to Brad for coming in and handling it. He did really well. He was unfazed and I was delighted with his performance."
Also in the Premier League, Brad Friedel went the distance for Spurs in a 3-0 win against Bolton. Spurs were already up a goal when Bolton's Gary Cahill was sent off in the 18th minute. Tim Howard was in goal for Everton, losing 1-0 to Stoke City on a 15th minute goal. A league down, Jonathan Spector played 75 minutes with Birmingham City losing to Cardiff City 1-0 on a 68th minute goal.
Scottish Premier League, and Maurice Edu went the distance for Rangers in a 2-1 win over Dunfermline. Rangers led after a 22nd minute own goal and were up two seven minutes later. A league down, Dominic Cervi got the 1-0 win for Greenock Morton over Falkirk.
Michael Bradley took his regular spot in Chievo's starting lineup in a scoreless draw against Atalanta. Sacha Kljestan and Anderlecht also ended up scoreless with Leuven in Belgium's Jupiler League.
Bundesliga, and Steve Cherundolo started for Hannover in a 1-1 draw with Freiburg. Hannover were the recipients of a 44th minute own goal with Freiburg equalizing in the 67th. Timmy Chandler went the distance for Nurnberg, losing 2-0 to Hamburg. The Americans at Hoffenheim both saw action with Danny Williams going the distance and Fabian Johnson playing 59 minutes in a 2-0 loss to Bayer Leverkusen. A league down, Luis Robles was in goal for Karlsruhe, losing 2-0 to Eintracht Frankfurt. Edson Buddle went the distance in a losing effort for Ingolstadt, 1-0 to Bruansweig.
In Sweden, Clarence Goodson was in the starting lineup for Brondby, splitting the points with Koge in a 1-1 draw. Michael Parkhurst got the start for Nordsjaelland in a scoreless draw against Midtjylland. Chris Rolfe went the distance for AaB's 4-2 loss to Silkeborg.
