A tough night on Wednesday for Clint Dempsey and Fulham with Manchester United beating them 5-0 at Craven Cottage. Fulham trailed 3-0 at halftime, with United scoring in the 88th and 90th minutes. Brad Guzan got the start in goal for Aston Villa, and Villa got a 54th minute equalizer from Marc Albrighton after giving up a 17th minute penalty. But it would be Arsenal taking all three points from a Yossi Benayoun winner three minutes from time to finish 2-1. Tim Howard picked up the shutout in Everton's 1-0 win over Swansea City. Leon Osman scored in the 60th minute at Goodison Park. Zak Whitbread's Norwich City drew 2-2 with Wolves on Tuesday. Norwich gave up the lead twice at Molineux, with Whitbread going the distance.
Serie A, and Michael Bradley was in the starting eleven for Chievo, drawing 0-0 with Lazio in Rome. In the German Cup, Timmy Chandler went the distance for Nurnberg as they exited the tournament with a 1-0 loss to SpVgg Greuther Furth. Jermaine Jones and Schalke 04 also bowed out, losing 3-1 to Borussia Moenchengladbach. Schalke cut the lead to 2-1 in the 70th minute when Julian Draxler scored, but it would be 'Gladbach getting the final goal. Schalke played a man down from the 46th minute, and Jones followed in stoppage time. The American contingent at Hoffenheim did advance to the quarterfinals, beating Augsburg 2-1. Fabian Johnson got the start with Danny Williams subbing on in the 83rd minute.
Jozy Altidore's AZ ended up in a bizarre situation in the Dutch Cup against Ajax. 38 minutes in, a pitch invader attacked AZ's goalkeeper, who defended himself. The referee red carded the keeper, leading to AZ heading to the locker room and refusing to continue.
