On a blustery night at Goodison Park, it was Everton's American doing the most for their club. Landon Donovan got the start on his return to the club on loan. Everton took the lead in the 63rd minute when Tim Howard scored from a goal kick (the fourth in Premier League history) that seemed to accelerate after it took a bounce into the Bolton area. Howard's muted goal celebration told the story, respectful of how his opposite number Adam Bogdan must have felt. Bogdan's feelings improved four minutes later when David Ngog equalized. Bolton took the lead for good in the 78th minute through Gary Cahill.
“We tried to go with two centre-forwards, if we hadn’t some might have questioned it," Everton manager David Moyes said. "Apart from the goalkeeper and bits from Landon it was hard to say much positive.”
