Brad Friedel and Spurs got the better of Tim Howard and Landon Donovan's Everton in the latest battle of the Americans at Premier League level. Aaron Lennon fired in a shot from distance to open the scoring in the 35th minute, and Benoit Assou-Ekotto made it 2-0 with a strong shot in the 63rd. Friedel had an easy night, with Everton not putting a shot on goal. Donovan picked up a yellow card in the 45th minute.
"I thought we played well tonight," Everton manager David Moyes said. "I thought if we had a little bit more, if we had somebody who could score a goal like Assou-Ekotto's then we'd have had a rousing finish here tonight. If it wasn't for that goal we were really in the game."
A league down, Jonathan Spector got the start and Birmingham City got a late winner in a 2-1 win over Ipswich Town. Nikola Zigic opened the scoring in the 9th minute with Ipswich equalizing nine minutes later. It was Zigic again for Birmingham, scoring the winner in stoppage time.
Did Not Play: Marcus Hahnemann (Everton 0 - Spurs 2), Michael Bradley (Chievo 2 - Udinese 1)
