Clint Dempsey and Fulham had no luck against Manchester City at a snowy Emirates Stadium, falling 3-0. City were up from the penalty spot within ten minutes, making it 2-0 from an own-goal. It was 3-0 in the 72nd, with Joe Hart picking up the shutout.
"In the second half I think we had more possession," Fulham manager Martin Jol said. "That is exactly what you have to do. Even in the last eight minutes we had two chances. If you keep the ball you can create something but you have to do that from the first minute.'
Zak Whitbread and fellow center back Daniel Ayala didn't make it through the first-half for Norwich against Bolton, in a game they ended up winning 2-0. Both players left through injury, Ayala in the 22nd and Whitbread in the 40th. Whitbread had come close to scoring in the 11th minute, in another strong display. Norwich got on the board through Andrew Surman in the 70th minute, with Anthony Pilkington doubling that lead 15 minutes later.
"I thought that was an unbelievable display and we were terrific right from the start," Norwich manager Paul Lambert said. "We lost our two main centre halves, and we were playing two full-backs at centre-back… The performance today, to a man, was absolutely outstanding."
Tim Howard and Landon Donovan took their regular place in Everton's starting eleven in a 1-1 draw with Wigan in the rain at DW Stadium. Wigan opened the scoring in the 76th minute through an own-goal, with Victor Anichebe equalizing for Everton in the 83rd.
"For what the modern player normally plays on, they’re not used to that kind of surface," Everton manager David Moyes said. "But it was the same for both teams. When you lose a goal after it hits a big divot and bounces the other way, you just don’t see that any more. Because of that we felt it was a bit of injustice so I was pleased we scored.”
A league down, Jonathan Spector and Birmingham City played out a scoreless draw against Southampton. A league below that, Frank Simek was in the starting lineup for Carlisle United, beating Chesterfield 2-1.
Rangers exited the Scottish Cup in the Fifth Round, losing 2-0 to Dundee United. Carlos Bocanegra and Maurice Edu started. Dundee were up in the 16th and scored again in the 35th minute. Edu was yellow carded in the 82nd minute in a game where four Rangers players and five Dundee United players were shown yellow.
"I felt we attempted to push forward and the effort was certainly there to get balls in to the box, but there was a bit of guile missing in the end," Rangers manager Ally McCoist said. "I certainly don't have a problem with the way the players went about things in the second half."
Bundesliga, and Timmy Chandler subbed on at the hour mark for Nurnberg in their 2-0 loss to Borussia Dortmund. Nurnberg were down a goal when Chandler entered, with Dortmund scoring again in the 82nd. Dortmund are top of the table. Steve Cherundolo was in the lineup for Hannover 96 in a 1-0 win over Hertha Berlin. Mohammed Abdellaoue scored in the 68th minute with Cherundolo picking up a yellow card in the 56th. Hertha played a man down from the 75th. Fabian Johnson and Danny Williams both started for Hoffenheim, drawing 2-2 at home with Augsburg. Hoffenheim equalized in the 38th minute and went ahead from the penalty spot in the 51st. Augsburg equalized in the 72nd.
Elsewhere in Europe, Sacha Kljestan scored the second goal in Anderlecht's 4-2 win over Racing Genk. Anderlecht trailed early on, but came back to take a 3-1 lead. In Portugal, a tough outing in the Taca da Liga for Oguchi Onyewu, who was red carded in the 54th minute against Gil Vincente after picking up a second yellow for a foul in the box. Gil Vincente converted the ensuing penalty for the 1-0 win and advanced to the next round. The Taca da Liga uses a group stage for the Third Round, with four groups of four teams. Only the group leader advances, with Sporting finishing 3rd in Group A. The two teams drew 1-1 in their earlier meeting. Serie A, and Michael Bradley and Chievo lost 2-1 to Parma at the Stadio Marc Antonio Bentegodi. Cyril Thereau equalized for Chievo in the 50th minute, but a 69th minute own-goal meant three points for Parma.
Mexico, and a strong showing for several Americans. Herculez Gomez subbed on in the 76th for Santos Laguna, beating UNAM Pumas 2-1. Also on Saturday, Michael Orozco subbed out in the 62nd minute with San Luis shutout 3-0 by Monterrey. Santos's Rodolfo Salinas scored his club's second goal in the 64th minute and gave up an own goal in the 75th. DaMarcus Beasley went 55 minutes for Puebla, setting up their equalizer from the penalty spot in a 1-1 draw with Edgar Castillo's Tijuana who took the lead six minutes in. Castillo setup that goal. Jose Francisco Torres was in the eleven for Pachuca, in an odd afternoon at Toluca. The home team was on top less than a minute in through an own-goal, and it was 3-0 Tijuana by the 16th minute. Pachuca regrouped, scoring the 35th, 40th, and 64th and needing a stoppage time penalty for the surprise comeback win.
